What is Katana?

Katana is a free, no-login screener covering every company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It is built directly on annual securities reports filed with EDINET, the Japanese government's disclosure system, and holds ten years of fundamentals for each company.

Turn a plain-English investment thesis into a screen

Describe what you are looking for — for example, “cash-rich companies with modest earnings, where rising interest rates should lift interest income and improve the economics of the existing business” — and an AI converts it into concrete financial-metric conditions applied across every listed company. The conversion runs in your own ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, so there is no extra cost and nothing to sign up for.

Analyse what you find with ten years already loaded

Companies you surface can be analysed with ten years of financials handed to the AI up front. Rather than hunting for filings and assembling fragments, the AI starts from a complete series of revenue, earnings, cash and debt. That makes it possible to judge what a single year cannot show: whether earnings growth is durable, whether cash is genuinely accumulating, and how the balance sheet has changed over time.

Thesis in, candidate analysis out — in one continuous flow.

How Katana differs from other screeners

Japan has no shortage of screening tools. What Katana does differently is let you screen on your own idea rather than on a fixed menu of conditions.

Who it is for

About the data

Everything is derived from annual securities reports filed on EDINET — audited, primary-source documents rather than scraped aggregator data. The XBRL is fetched and normalised directly, and newly filed reports are picked up every morning.

Price-related values — share price, market capitalisation and every multiple derived from them — are reverse-computed from the P/E ratio disclosed in the filing and reflect the fiscal year-end rather than live market prices. Because the source is the annual report rather than quarterly summaries, a company's figures can be up to nearly a year old depending on its fiscal calendar and filing date.
